NorthwestPraxeum Longhouse Territories
Longhouse is our Guardian Art nature and cultural preserve located in Haida and Tlingit territory in the Northwest coastal region of British Columbia. This Praxeum is named for the Longhouse, the type of traditional communal dwellings built by coastal indigenous peoples since ancient times.
Our location
Located on the sacred island of Haida Gwaii, in the village of Skidagate, Praxeum Longhouse is our base for programs in the Pacific Northwest region. Surrounded by majestic coastlines, the Haida Gwaii archipelago offers a wealth of lakes, rivers, and mountains and old-growth forests. The region has been populated by the native Haida people for over 13,000 years, and its landscape is infused with their deep ancestral roots. Our goal is to develop Praxeum Longhouse into a gathering nexus for year-round local training as well as for hosting camps and retreats that will unite the youth of the Northwest nations and rural communities through the power and training of Guardian Art.
Our program
Our retreats combine ancient training and ceremonies that honor the original peoples of this land with physically and mentally challenging adventures such as night hikes, survival skills, traditional water/land-based teachings, sports, and games. Youth learn how to cook indigenous foods and work together to prepare, serve, and clean up after meals. Most importantly, they learn skills and gain confidence to become guardians of the future.
Our impact
We’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative experience of bringing youth together in places immersed in nature and heritage. The experience leads to a deep-channeled focus, powerful personal growth, and the emergence of a true respect for one another, our heritages, and our land.
